Middle lobe of right lung
Lobus medius pulmonis dextri
- Origin
- Wedge-shaped lobe bounded superiorly by the horizontal fissure and inferiorly/posteriorly by the oblique fissure
- Insertion
- Adjacent to the right border of the heart (right atrium and pericardium)
- Function
- Ventilates the anteromedial mid-zone of the right lung
- Innervation
- Pulmonary plexus
- Movement & chain
- Anterolateral displacement during inspiration
- Palpation
- Auscultated anteriorly on the right chest between the 4th and 6th ribs (nipple level)
- Clinical
- Middle lobe syndrome (recurrent atelectasis and bronchiectasis due to collar-like peribronchial lymphadenopathy), lobar pneumonia showing classic loss of the right heart border ('silhouette sign') on CXR.
