Viscera (heart, lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract)
Inferior lobe of right lung
Lobus inferior pulmonis dextri
- Origin
- Largest lobe of the right lung; lies posterior and inferior to the oblique fissure (T3-T4 spine to lung base)
- Insertion
- Rests on the right dome of the diaphragm and descends into the right costodiaphragmatic recess
- Function
- Provides the greatest volumetric gas exchange capacity of the right lung
- Innervation
- Pulmonary plexus
- Movement & chain
- Extensive vertical excursion tracking diaphragmatic movement
- Palpation
- Auscultated and percussed posteriorly over the right lower back (T4 to T11)
- Clinical
- Right lower lobe pneumonia, gravity-dependent aspiration pneumonia (superior segment B6), pleural effusion accumulating in the costodiaphragmatic recess.
- Segmental innervation
- T2-T5 spinal segments (diaphragmatic pleura C3-C5)
- In clinical practice
- Detecting crackles at the right lung base, monitoring oxygen saturation and response to antibiotic therapy, thoracentesis support
- Region in the model
- Viscera (heart, lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract)
