Upper limb
Brachial veins (Venae comitantes of brachial artery)
Venae brachiales
- Origin
- Formed in the cubital fossa by the junction of the radial and ulnar venae comitantes
- Insertion
- Ascend alongside the brachial artery to join the basilic vein and form the axillary vein
- Function
- Deep venous drainage of the forearm and anterior arm muscles assisted by arteriovenous pulsation pump
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Valvular segments assist unidirectional flow augmented by adjacent arterial pulsations
- Palpation
- Not palpable due to deep fascial investment alongside the brachial artery
- Clinical
- Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT), often related to PICC lines or hypercoagulable states
- Segmental innervation
- Deep systemic venous circulation
- In clinical practice
- Duplex ultrasound surveillance for line-associated thrombosis; elevation and anticoagulation therapy
- Region in the model
- Upper limb
