Upper limb
Basilic vein
Vena basilica
- Origin
- Originates from the medial/ulnar side of the dorsal venous network of the hand
- Insertion
- Ascends the medial forearm, pierces the brachial fascia at mid-arm, and joins the brachial veins to form the axillary vein
- Function
- Major venous pathway draining the medial aspect of the hand and forearm into the deep axillary system
- Innervation
- Sympathetic perivascular fibers
- Movement & chain
- Subcutaneous in forearm, becomes deep subfascial in mid-arm
- Palpation
- Easily palpable and visible along the medial aspect of the forearm and antecubital fossa
- Clinical
- Superficial phlebitis; preferred vessel for brachiobasilic AV fistula creation and PICC line insertion
- Segmental innervation
- Upper limb venous drainage to axillary vein
- In clinical practice
- Optimal vein for ultrasound-guided PICC-line placement and large-bore peripheral cannulation
- Region in the model
- Upper limb
