Tricuspid valve
Valva atrioventricularis dextra
- Origin
- Guards the right atrioventricular orifice between the right atrium and right ventricle; consists of anterior, posterior/inferior, and septal cusps anchored by chordae tendineae
- Insertion
- Papillary muscles of the right ventricle via chordae tendineae
- Function
- Prevents backflow of blood from the right ventricle into the right atrium during ventricular systole
- Innervation
- Cardiac plexus innervation to underlying myocardium and conduction tissue
- Movement & chain
- Closes during ventricular systole, contributing to the first heart sound (T1 component of S1)
- Palpation
- Auscultated at the 4th-5th left intercostal space at the lower sternal border
- Clinical
- Tricuspid regurgitation (pansystolic murmur louder on inspiration - Carvallo's sign; often secondary to RV dilation), infective endocarditis in IV drug users, Ebstein's anomaly.
