Anterior papillary muscle of right ventricle
Musculus papillaris anterior ventriculi dextri
- Origin
- Anterolateral wall of the right ventricle, often arising in part from the septomarginal trabecula (moderator band)
- Insertion
- Chordae tendineae attaching to the anterior and posterior cusps of the tricuspid valve
- Function
- Tethers the tricuspid valve cusps during ventricular systole to prevent valve prolapse into the right atrium
- Innervation
- Cardiac plexus; conduction delivered through the right bundle branch via the moderator band
- Movement & chain
- Contracts synchronously with right ventricular systole, maintaining optimal chordal tension
- Palpation
- Evaluated via transthoracic/transesophageal echocardiography
- Clinical
- Dysfunction or traumatic rupture results in acute severe tricuspid regurgitation and right heart failure.
- Segmental innervation
- T1-T4 spinal cord segments
