Superior lobe of left lung
Lobus superior pulmonis sinistri
- Origin
- Extends superiorly into the thoracic inlet (cupula pleurae, 2-3 cm above clavicle) and bounded inferiorly by the oblique fissure
- Insertion
- Features the cardiac notch and lingula along its anteroinferior margin
- Function
- Facilitates alveolar gas exchange for the upper and anterior portions of the left hemithorax
- Innervation
- Pulmonary plexus (sympathetic T2-T5, parasympathetic vagus)
- Movement & chain
- Anterosuperior expansion during tidal and deep inspiration
- Palpation
- Auscultated and percussed anteriorly over the left chest from above the clavicle down to the 4th-5th rib
- Clinical
- Pancoast apex tumors producing Horner syndrome and brachial plexopathy; secondary pulmonary tuberculosis reactivation cavitation.
- Segmental innervation
- T2-T5 spinal segments (C8-T1 for apical lesions)

- Upper lobe breath sound auscultation, monitoring post-lobectomy chest tubes and spirometry
