Posterior interosseous artery
Arteria interossea posterior
- Origin
- Terminal branch of the common interosseous artery
- Insertion
- Passes backward above the interosseous membrane and descends between superficial and deep extensor layers to the wrist
- Function
- Supplies the posterior forearm extensor muscles and contributes to the dorsal carpal arterial network
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Accommodates wrist and finger extension within the dorsal extensor compartment
- Palpation
- Not palpable through the extensor muscle bellies
- Clinical
- Involved in posterior forearm compartment syndrome; vascular basis for the reverse posterior interosseous flap (PIA flap)
- Segmental innervation
- C7–C8 segments

- Major pedicle in reconstructive plastic surgery for soft-tissue defect coverage of the hand and wrist
