Superficial external pudendal vein
Vena pudenda externa superficialis
- Origin
- Originates from the superficial venous plexus of the scrotum/labium majus and pubic region
- Insertion
- Passes laterally to terminate into the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction
- Function
- Drains venous blood from the external genitalia into the saphenous system
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Subcutaneous course across the medial groin crease
- Palpation
- Not palpable through groin subcutaneous tissues
- Clinical
- Incompetence causes vulvar varicosities in pregnancy and pelvic venous congestion syndrome
- Segmental innervation
- Superficial pelvic/groin drainage
- In clinical practice
- Systematically ligated during high saphenofemoral junction disconnection
