Deep femoral vein (Profunda femoris vein)
Vena profunda femoris
- Origin
- Formed by tributaries draining the perforating and circumflex femoral veins
- Insertion
- Ascends with the profunda femoris artery to terminate into the femoral vein in the femoral triangle
- Function
- Collects deep venous blood from the musculature and bony cortex of the thigh
- Innervation
- Sympathetic perivascular nerves
- Movement & chain
- Augmented by deep muscular contractions of the thigh
- Palpation
- Not palpable due to deep subfascial course
- Clinical
- Deep vein thrombosis isolated to the profunda femoris vein represents an underdiagnosed source of pulmonary embolism
- Segmental innervation
- Deep lower limb venous system
- In clinical practice
- Must be visualized during complete lower extremity venous duplex ultrasound protocols
