Medial circumflex femoral vein
Vena circumflexa femoris medialis
- Origin
- Arises from the intra-capsular and retinacular veins of the femoral head and neck
- Insertion
- Passes posteromedially around the femoral neck to drain into the deep femoral or femoral vein
- Function
- Provides venous return from the hip joint, femoral head, and adductor muscle mass
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Wraps around the posterior aspect of the femoral neck
- Palpation
- Not palpable through deep groin musculature
- Clinical
- Venous drainage of the femoral head; compromised in displaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures
- Segmental innervation
- Deep hip venous network
- In clinical practice
- Protected during hip arthroplasty exposures to avoid deep pelvic/groin bleeding
