Superficial circumflex iliac vein
Vena circumflexa iliaca superficialis
- Origin
- Arises from the superficial venous plexus over the iliac crest and lateral groin
- Insertion
- Passes medially along the inguinal ligament to enter the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction
- Function
- Drains superficial venous blood from the lateral groin and hip
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Subcutaneous course along the inguinal fold
- Palpation
- Not palpable through subcutaneous fat
- Clinical
- Forms part of the classic venous star at the saphenofemoral junction; inadequate ligation leads to varicose vein recurrence
- Segmental innervation
- Superficial lower limb drainage
