Viscera (heart, lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract)
Pulmonary valve
Valva trunci pulmonalis
- Origin
- Located at the apex of the conus arteriosus at the base of the pulmonary trunk; consists of three semilunar cusps (anterior, left, right)
- Insertion
- Attached to the fibrous ring of the pulmonary orifice
- Function
- Prevents backward regurgitation of blood from the pulmonary trunk into the right ventricle during diastole
- Innervation
- Passive avascular fibrous tissue operated by transvalvular pressure gradients
- Movement & chain
- Opens during right ventricular systole and snaps shut at the beginning of ventricular diastole, contributing to the second heart sound (P2)
- Palpation
- Auscultated at the 2nd left intercostal space at the sternal border
- Clinical
- Pulmonary valve stenosis (congenital, Tetralogy of Fallot), pulmonary regurgitation (secondary to pulmonary arterial hypertension, Graham Steell murmur), infective endocarditis.
- Segmental innervation
- T1-T4 cardiac viscerotome
- In clinical practice
- Auscultatory assessment of systolic ejection murmurs, echocardiographic Doppler velocity tracking, balloon valvuloplasty post-care
- Region in the model
- Viscera (heart, lungs, liver, gastrointestinal tract)
