Lacrimal sac
Saccus lacrimalis
- Origin
- In the lacrimal sac fossa between the anterior and posterior lacrimal crest, medially in the orbit
- Insertion
- Continues inferiorly into the nasolacrimal duct
- Function
- Collects tear fluid from the canaliculi and passes it on to the nose in a metered way
- Innervation
- Sensory via the infratrochlear nerve (V1)
- Movement & chain
- Alternately widened and squeezed empty by the orbicularis oculi during blinking
- Palpation
- Pressure on the sac medially below the canthus: in dacryocystitis pus or mucus appears at the punctum
- Clinical
- Dacryocystitis (red, painful swelling below the medial canthus), mucocele, lacrimal obstruction in newborns
