Ampulla of the lacrimal canaliculus
Ampulla canaliculi lacrimalis
- Origin
- Short vertical dilation of the lacrimal canaliculus just behind the lacrimal punctum
- Insertion
- Continues into the horizontal part of the lacrimal canaliculus
- Function
- Collects the tear fluid entering through the punctum and forms the bend towards the horizontal canaliculus
- Innervation
- Sensory via the infratrochlear nerve (V1)
- Movement & chain
- Widens when the eyelids open, which draws tear fluid in
- Palpation
- Visible on lid eversion; patency checked by careful probing and syringing
- Clinical
- Damage from careless probing, stenosis after chronic inflammation

- Probing of the lacrimal passages belongs to the ophthalmologist; inexpert probing makes a stenosis permanent
