Anterior interosseous artery
Arteria interossea anterior
- Origin
- Terminal branch of the common interosseous artery
- Insertion
- Descends along the anterior surface of the interosseous membrane with the anterior interosseous nerve to the pronator quadratus
- Function
- Supplies deep volar muscles (FPL, FDP, pronator quadratus) and provides major nutrient arteries to radius and ulna
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Deeply secured along the volar midline of the forearm
- Palpation
- Not palpable through deep flexor muscle bulk
- Clinical
- Vascular compromise in deep volar compartment syndrome; accompanied by Kiloh-Nevin syndrome (AIN palsy)
- Segmental innervation
- C7–T1 roots
- In clinical practice
- Preserves critical periosteal and endosteal blood supply essential for forearm bone union
