Anterior segment of the eyeball
Segmentum anterius bulbi oculi
- Origin
- The part of the globe in front of the vitreous: cornea, angle, iris, ciliary body and lens
- Insertion
- Borders the vitreous face and the zonule behind
- Function
- Handles refraction and the regulation of light entry, and produces and drains the aqueous humour
- Innervation
- Sensory via V1; autonomic via the ciliary ganglion (parasympathetic) and carotid plexus (sympathetic)
- Movement & chain
- Accommodation and pupillary reactions take place almost entirely within this segment
- Palpation
- Standard slit-lamp examination front to back: cornea, anterior chamber, iris, lens
- Clinical
- Anterior uveitis, cataract, glaucoma and dry eye disease
- Segmental innervation
- Sensory V1; autonomic III and T1-T2
- In clinical practice
- Most ophthalmic emergencies in primary care involve the anterior segment
