Elbow
Lateral epicondylalgia (tennis elbow)
- Mechanism
- Overload of the common extensor tendon at the lateral epicondyle, usually in the extensor carpi radialis brevis tendon. Repeated forceful gripping with the wrist extended is the usual load.
- Recognition
- Point tenderness just distal to the lateral epicondyle, pain on gripping, and a positive Cozen test: resistance against wrist extension with the elbow extended.
- Course
- The -itis ending has been abandoned: histologically there is no inflammation but tendon degeneration. The course is long but favourable; most are symptom-free within a year, even without intervention.
