Venae fibulares (peroneae)
- Origin
- Arise from the deep calcaneal and lateral malleolar venous networks
- Insertion
- Ascend as paired venae comitantes with the fibular artery to terminate in the posterior tibial veins
- Function
- Deep venous drainage of the lateral leg compartment and calcaneal region
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Embedded deeply within flexor hallucis longus
- Palpation
- Not palpable through deep lateral musculature
- Clinical
- Frequent site of distal deep vein thrombosis (calf DVT)
- Segmental innervation
- Deep lower limb venous system
- In clinical practice
- Visualized during lower extremity venous ultrasound to rule out propagating calf thrombi
