Ulnar collateral ligament of the wrist
Ligamentum collaterale carpi ulnare
- Origin
- From the styloid process of the ulna
- Insertion
- To the triquetral and pisiform bones, with fibres to the flexor retinaculum
- Function
- Limits radial deviation of the wrist and stabilises its ulnar side
- Innervation
- Dorsal branch of the ulnar nerve
- Movement & chain
- Tightens on radial deviation and relaxes on ulnar deviation
- Palpation
- Palpation distal to the ulnar styloid; provocation by radial deviation and the ballottement test
- Clinical
- Ulnar wrist pain after a fall on the outstretched hand, often with TFCC injury; chronic ulnocarpal instability
- Segmental innervation
- Sensory C8-T1
- In clinical practice
- Ulnar wrist pain that persists beyond six weeks warrants imaging of the TFCC
