Suspensory ligament of the eyeball
Ligamentum suspensorium bulbi (Lockwood)
- Origin
- Hammock-shaped thickening of the fascial sheath of the eyeball (Tenon capsule) below the globe, between the medial and lateral orbital wall
- Insertion
- Blends into the medial and lateral retinacula of the orbit
- Function
- Carries the globe like a hammock, so that the eye stays in place even without the orbital floor
- Innervation
- Connective tissue; sensory territory of the ophthalmic nerve (V1)
- Movement & chain
- Moves with the globe and limits excursion in extreme directions of gaze
- Palpation
- Not palpable; assessed on CT or MRI after orbital trauma
- Clinical
- Blow-out fracture of the orbital floor with entrapment of the inferior rectus and diplopia on upgaze; enophthalmos
- Segmental innervation
- Sensory V1/V2

- After orbital trauma always test eye movements and double vision before swelling sets in
