Musculus rhomboideus minor

Origin

Spinous processes of C7-T1

Insertion

Medial border of the scapula, at the level of the root of the spine of the scapula

Function

Retraction and elevation of the scapula

Innervation

Dorsal scapular nerve (C4-C5)

Movement & chain

Works closely with rhomboid major as a functional unit in scapular retraction and elevation.

Palpation

Palpable directly above rhomboid major, at the level of the root of the spine of the scapula, during scapular retraction

Clinical

Weakness, like that of rhomboid major, contributes to a protracted shoulder posture and interscapular complaints.

Segmental innervation

Dorsal scapular nerve, C4-C5.

In clinical practice

Together with rhomboid major, often involved in myofascial trigger points between the shoulder blades.
