Pronator Teres, Ulnar Head

Musculus pronator teres, caput ulnare

Origin

Coronoid process of the ulna

Insertion

Lateral side of the radius (together with the humeral head, at the middle of the shaft)

Function

Pronation of the forearm and assists elbow flexion

Innervation

Median nerve (C6–C7)

Movement & chain

Together with the humeral head forms pronator teres; the median nerve passes between the two heads and can become entrapped there.

Palpation

Palpable medially in the elbow crease as an oblique band running distolaterally, during resisted pronation with the elbow flexed.

Clinical

Entrapment of the median nerve between the humeral and ulnar heads (pronator teres syndrome) causes pain in the proximal forearm and sensory symptoms in the median nerve territory, often confused with carpal tunnel syndrome.

Segmental innervation

C6–C7.

In clinical practice

Focus on hand function and edema prevention; ensure IV cannulas and splints maintain functional hand position to prevent joint contractures.
