Subclavian nerve (Nerve to subclavius)
Nervus subclavius
- Origin
- Arises from the superior trunk of the brachial plexus (C5–C6)
- Insertion
- Descends anterior to the subclavian artery to enter the subclavius muscle; often gives an accessory phrenic root
- Function
- Motor supply to subclavius muscle and sensory fibers to the sternoclavicular joint
- Innervation
- Motor (C5–C6)
- Movement & chain
- Stabilizes the clavicle within the sternoclavicular joint during shoulder girdle movements
- Palpation
- Not palpable through supraclavicular fascia
- Clinical
- May convey accessory phrenic nerve fibers; inadvertent injury during neck surgery may partially affect diaphragmatic function
- Segmental innervation
- C5–C6 roots
