Meso-appendix
Mesoappendix (Mesenteriolum appendicis vermiformis)
- Origin
- Triangular peritoneal fold arising from the inferior layer of the mesentery of the terminal ileum
- Insertion
- Attaches along the entire length of the vermiform appendix
- Function
- Suspends the appendix and carries the appendicular artery (branch of the ileocolic artery), veins, lymphatics, and nerves within its free edge
- Innervation
- Carries autonomic nerve fibers accompanying the appendicular vessels
- Movement & chain
- Allows mobility of the appendix

- Key surgical target during appendectomy: the appendicular artery running in the meso-appendix must be securely ligated/coagulated to prevent intraperitoneal hemorrhage.
