Subtendinous Bursa of the Infraspinatus
Bursa subtendinea musculi infraspinati
- Origin
- Between the tendon of the infraspinatus muscle and the capsule of the glenohumeral joint
- Insertion
- May communicate with the glenohumeral joint
- Function
- Reduces friction between the infraspinatus tendon and the underlying shoulder joint capsule
- Innervation
- No independent innervation; serous connective tissue
- Movement & chain
- Facilitates gliding of the infraspinatus tendon over the posterior glenoid rim in external rotation and abduction.
- Palpation
- Deep between the infraspinatus tendon and posterior glenohumeral capsule; not directly accessible to surface palpation.
- Clinical
- Frequently communicates with the glenohumeral joint cavity; involved in rotator cuff calcific tendinopathy and adhesive capsulitis.
- Segmental innervation
- C5–C6 (suprascapular nerve)
- In clinical practice
- Frequent repositioning to prevent trochanteric and heel pressure ulcers; ensure hip dislocation precautions in total hip arthroplasty patients.
