Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
Common iliac arteries
Arteria iliaca communis (dextra et sinistra)
- Origin
- Arise from the aortic bifurcation at L4 level (intercristal plane)
- Insertion
- Pass inferolaterally for ~5 cm to bifurcate at the sacroiliac joint (L5-S1 level) into the external and internal iliac arteries
- Function
- Major conduit conducting systemic arterial blood to the pelvis, perineum, and lower limbs
- Innervation
- Superior hypogastric and aortic plexuses
- Movement & chain
- High-pressure pulsatile flow
- Palpation
- Deep lower abdominal quadrant palpation in slender patients
- Clinical
- Common iliac artery aneurysm (isolated or extending from AAA; risk of rupture or ureteral compression causing hydronephrosis), aortoiliac occlusive disease (Leriche syndrome).
- Segmental innervation
- L4-S1 spinal segments
- In clinical practice
- Iliac branch device (IBD) EVAR planning to preserve internal iliac perfusion and prevent buttock claudication
- Region in the model
- Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
