Upper limb
Collarbone
Clavicula
- Origin
- S-shaped strut connecting the sternum (sternoclavicular joint) to the acromion of the scapula (acromioclavicular joint)
- Insertion
- Attachment site for pectoralis major, deltoid, trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, and subclavius muscles
- Function
- Acts as mechanical strut keeping upper limb away from thorax; transmits forces to axial skeleton; protects neurovascular bundle
- Innervation
- Supraclavicular nerves (C3–C4) and nerve to subclavius (C5–C6)
- Movement & chain
- Elevation, depression, anterior/posterior rotation, and protraction/retraction during shoulder movement
- Palpation
- Palpable subcutaneously along its entire length
- Clinical
- Clavicle fractures (one of the most common fractures in falls on outstretched hand or direct blow); AC joint separation
- Segmental innervation
- C3–C6
- In clinical practice
- Key anatomical landmark for subclavian vein catheterization and interscalene / supraclavicular nerve blocks
- Region in the model
- Upper limb
