Infrapatellar bursae (Subcutaneous and deep)
Bursae infrapatellares et bursa tuberositatis tibiae
- Origin
- Subcutaneous infrapatellar bursa (between skin and patellar tendon), deep infrapatellar bursa (between patellar tendon and tibia), and bursa over tibial tuberosity
- Insertion
- Surround the distal extensor mechanism and tibial tuberosity on the anterior proximal tibia
- Function
- Reduce friction between the patellar ligament, infrapatellar fat pad (Hoffa's pad), and the tibial tuberosity
- Innervation
- Sensory branches of the infrapatellar nerve (saphenous nerve)
- Movement & chain
- Compressed dynamically during deep flexion and jumping deceleration
- Palpation
- Palpable medially and laterally adjacent to the patellar ligament
- Clinical
- Infrapatellar bursitis (Clergyman's knee from erect kneeling); deep infrapatellar bursitis associated with Jumper's knee; Osgood-Schlatter apophysitis in adolescents
- Segmental innervation
- L3, L4 spinal segments
