Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
Ascending lumbar veins
Vena lumbalis ascendens (dextra et sinistra)
- Origin
- Arise from the common iliac veins and ascend vertically behind the psoas major muscle
- Insertion
- Pass superiorly to join the subcostal vein, continuing as the azygos vein (right) and hemiazygos vein (left)
- Function
- Forms a longitudinal cavo-caval anastomotic trunk connecting the iliac/IVC system to the azygos/SVC system
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor plexus
- Movement & chain
- Bidirectional collateral venous drainage
- Palpation
- Not palpated directly
- Clinical
- Crucial collateral pathway in inferior vena cava (IVC) thrombosis, agenesis, or extrinsic compression, diverting lower body venous return to the superior vena cava.
- Segmental innervation
- L1-L5 spinal levels
- In clinical practice
- Identification of dilated collateral venous pathways on CT venography in IVC filter thrombosis
- Region in the model
- Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
