Anconeus

Musculus anconeus

Origin

Lateral epicondyle of the humerus

Insertion

Lateral surface of the olecranon and the proximal posterior surface of the ulna

Function

Assists extension of the elbow and stabilizes the elbow joint during pronation and supination

Innervation

Radial nerve

Movement & chain

Acts as a small synergist of triceps brachii in extending the elbow and helps tension the joint capsule during forearm rotation so it does not become pinched.

Palpation

Palpable as a small triangular muscle between the lateral epicondyle and the olecranon, just distal to the lateral elbow crease.

Clinical

Can be involved in complaints around the lateral epicondyle (tennis elbow), because the muscle lies close to the attachment of the forearm extensors.

Segmental innervation

Radial nerve, C7-C8.

In clinical practice

Focus on hand function and edema prevention; ensure IV cannulas and splints maintain functional hand position to prevent joint contractures.
