Anterior tibial veins
Venae tibiales anteriores
- Origin
- Arise from the deep dorsal venous arch of the foot
- Insertion
- Ascend as paired venae comitantes with the anterior tibial artery through the interosseous membrane to join the popliteal vein
- Function
- Provide deep venous drainage for the anterior leg compartment and dorsal foot
- Innervation
- Sympathetic vasomotor fibers
- Movement & chain
- Facilitated by muscular action of the anterior compartment dorsiflexors
- Palpation
- Not palpable through deep anterior fascia
- Clinical
- Deep vein thrombosis of the anterior tibial vein; collapsed during acute anterior compartment syndrome
- Segmental innervation
- Anterior leg deep venous network

- Evaluated during comprehensive distal lower limb venous Doppler examinations
