- Origin
- Begins ~3 cm proximal to the medial malleolus in the deep posterior leg compartment
- Insertion
- Traverses the tarsal tunnel posterior to tibialis posterior to reach the chiasma plantare in the deep sole
- Function
- Facilitates frictionless movement of the flexor digitorum longus tendon into the plantar compartment
- Innervation
- Branches from the tibial nerve
- Movement & chain
- Displaces during active flexion of digits 2-5 and ankle plantarflexion
- Palpation
- Palpable behind the medial malleolus within the tarsal tunnel
- Clinical
- FDL tenosynovitis; component of tarsal tunnel overcrowding syndrome
