- Begins between the superior and inferior extensor retinacula anterior to the ankle
- Insertion
- Extends across the talocrural joint and foot dorsum beyond the first tarsometatarsal joint
- Function
- Synovial gliding sheath reducing friction for the extensor hallucis longus tendon
- Innervation
- Articular/synovial branches from the deep fibular nerve
- Movement & chain
- Displaces during hallux extension and ankle dorsiflexion
- Palpation
- Palpable along the dorsal midfoot leading to the hallux
- Clinical
- EHL tenosynovitis from tight footwear or ski boots; secondary anterior tarsal tunnel compression
- Segmental innervation
- L5, S1 spinal roots
