Bursae trochantericae et gluteales

Origin

Between gluteus maximus, medius, minimus tendons, iliotibial band, and greater trochanter/ischial tuberosity

Insertion

Greater trochanter of femur and ischial tuberosity (ischiogluteal bursa)

Function

Reduces friction between abductor tendons, IT band, and greater trochanter/ischium during gait and sitting

Innervation

Superior gluteal nerve and sciatic branches (L4–S1)

Movement & chain

Facilitates seamless gliding of gluteal tendons during stance-phase pelvic stabilization

Palpation

Direct focal tenderness over greater trochanter or ischial tuberosity

Clinical

Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome (GTPS / gluteal tendinopathy / bursitis causing lateral hip pain worse lying on side); Ischiogluteal bursitis ('weaver's bottom' pain when sitting).
