Tensor Fasciae Latae
Musculus tensor fasciae latae
- Origin
- Anterior superior iliac spine and the iliac crest
- Insertion
- Iliotibial tract, which attaches to Gerdy's tubercle on the lateral tibial condyle
- Function
- Abduction, internal rotation and slight flexion of the hip; tensions the iliotibial tract and stabilizes the knee in extension
- Innervation
- Superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
- Movement & chain
- Works together with gluteus medius to stabilize the pelvis during the stance phase of gait (prevents a Trendelenburg sign).
- Palpation
- Palpable just distal and lateral to the ASIS, especially during resisted abduction and internal rotation.
- Clinical
- Overuse of the iliotibial tract (iliotibial band syndrome) causes pain at the lateral knee, often in runners.
- Segmental innervation
- Superior gluteal nerve, L4-S1.
- In clinical practice
- Wound management post-laparotomy/chest drain and abdominal wall monitoring; support incision site during coughing to prevent wound dehiscence.
