- Origin
- Hyaline cartilage of sternal costal notches, fibrocartilage of manubriosternal joint, xiphoid, and linea alba
- Insertion
- True ribs (1–7) and abdominal wall aponeuroses
- Function
- Provides anterior flexible attachment of the rib cage and anchor for abdominal muscles
- Innervation
- Intercostal nerves (T1–T7)
- Movement & chain
- Pump-handle chest expansion during respiration
- Palpation
- Palpable along the midline anterior chest (Sternal angle of Louis, Xiphoid)
- Clinical
- Costochondritis / Tietze syndrome; sternal fracture; diastasis recti abdominis.
