Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
Rotatores Longi
Musculi rotatores longi
- Origin
- Transverse process of a vertebra
- Insertion
- Lamina of the vertebra two segments above
- Function
- Segmental rotation and stabilization of the spine over a greater range than the short rotatores
- Innervation
- Dorsal rami of the spinal nerves at that level
- Movement & chain
- Works together with the short rotatores and the other transversospinal muscles in segmental rotation and stabilization of the spine.
- Palpation
- Crosses two vertebral levels in the deepest paraspinal gutter; not distinguishable from short rotators on palpation.
- Clinical
- Assist contralateral spinal rotation and provide continuous postural tuning; involved in segmental spine stiffness.
- Segmental innervation
- Dorsal rami T1-T12
- In clinical practice
- Ergonomic patient repositioning (log-roll technique in spinal trauma) and pressure offloading; maintain neutral spinal alignment in bedridden patients.
- Region in the model
- Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
