Symphysis pubica (Discus interpubicus et ligamenta pubica)

Origin

Symphysial surface of right pubic bone

Insertion

Symphysial surface of left pubic bone, interpubic fibrocartilage disc, superior/inferior (arcuate) pubic ligaments

Function

Anterior midline junction closing the pelvic ring; absorbs vertical and rotational shear during single-leg stance and gait

Innervation

Iliohypogastric, ilioinguinal, and genitofemoral nerves (L1–L2)

Movement & chain

Minimal physiologic translation (1–2 mm), widening substantially during childbirth under relaxin influence

Palpation

Palpable along anterior midline lower abdomen at pubic crest

Clinical

Pubic symphysis diastasis / symphysiolysis in pregnancy; osteitis pubis / athletic pubalgia in kicking athletes; open-book pelvic fracture.
