Procerus

Musculus procerus

Origin

Fascia over the lower part of the nasal bone and the upper nasal cartilage

Insertion

Skin between the eyebrows (glabella)

Function

Pulls the skin between the eyebrows downward, producing horizontal wrinkles across the bridge of the nose

Innervation

Buccal/temporal branches of the facial nerve (CN VII)

Movement & chain

Pulls the skin between the eyebrows downward and causes the horizontal crease across the bridge of the nose; a mimetic movement.

Palpation

Palpable as a vertical band over the root of the nose when wrinkling the nose (for example in disgust).

Clinical

Together with corrugator supercilii, a target muscle for botulinum toxin treatment of glabellar lines.

Segmental innervation

CN VII, motor.

In clinical practice

Forms horizontal wrinkles over the nasal bridge; treated with botulinum toxin for dynamic facial lines and aesthetic/migraine protocols.
