- Transverse process of C7 and T1-T10
- Insertion
- The rib directly below
- Function
- Elevation of the ribs; assists inspiration and slight lateral flexion/rotation of the thoracic spine
- Innervation
- Dorsal rami of the thoracic spinal nerves
- Movement & chain
- Works synergistically with the external intercostals during inspiration and with the deep back muscles in rotational control of the thoracic spine.
- Palpation
- Pass obliquely from C7–T11 transverse processes to the rib below; palpable deep in the paravertebral gutter.
- Clinical
- Elevate the ribs during inspiratory demand and assist thoracic rotation; irritated in costovertebral joint dysfunction.
- Segmental innervation
- Dorsal rami C8-T10.

- Skin and pressure point inspection; maintain comfortable positioning and proper body mechanics during patient handling and daily care.
