Ischiofemoral ligament
Ligamentum ischiofemorale
- Origin
- Ischium posterior and inferior to acetabulum
- Insertion
- Superior aspect of femoral neck near trochanteric fossa (fibers spiral superolaterally across posterior neck)
- Function
- Reinforces the posterior hip capsule; primary restraint against internal rotation and extension, screwing the femoral head firmly into the socket
- Innervation
- Nerve to quadratus femoris (L4–S1)
- Movement & chain
- Taut in hip extension and internal rotation
- Palpation
- Deep posterior buttock, non-palpable
- Clinical
- Ischiofemoral impingement syndrome (narrowing between lesser trochanter and ischium irritating sciatic nerve); posterior hip dislocation.
