Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
Iliopsoas Fascia
Fascia iliopsoatica
- Origin
- Envelops the iliopsoas muscle (iliacus and psoas major together), attached to the iliac crest and the pelvic brim
- Insertion
- Extends distally under the inguinal ligament into the thigh and fuses there with the fascia lata
- Function
- Envelops the iliopsoas muscle, delimits the compartment within which a psoas abscess or hemorrhage can spread, and forms part of the posterior wall of the muscular lacuna
- Innervation
- No independent motor innervation (connective tissue structure, not contractile tissue)
- Movement & chain
- Encloses the iliopsoas muscle and forms the iliopectineal arch separating muscular and vascular lacunae.
- Palpation
- Covers the iliopsoas in the posterior abdominal wall and iliac fossa; palpable as deep resistance medial to the ASIS.
- Clinical
- Guides retroperitoneal fluid and psoas abscesses (e.g. from tuberculous spondylitis) down beneath the inguinal ligament into the femoral triangle.
- Segmental innervation
- L1–L3 (lumbar plexus)
- In clinical practice
- Wound management post-laparotomy/chest drain and abdominal wall monitoring; support incision site during coughing to prevent wound dehiscence.
- Region in the model
- Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
