Iliopectineal (Iliopsoas) and deep pelvic bursae
Bursa iliopectinea et bursae musculorum pelvis
- Origin
- Between iliopsoas tendon and iliopubic eminence / anterior hip capsule; deep to obturator internus and piriformis tendons
- Insertion
- Anterior hip joint capsule and lesser trochanter
- Function
- Largest bursa of the hip (communicates with hip joint in ~15% of adults); cushions iliopsoas excursion over the pelvic brim
- Innervation
- Femoral and sciatic nerve articular branches (L2–S1)
- Movement & chain
- Smooth gliding during hip flexion, extension, and stair climbing
- Palpation
- Palpable deeply in femoral triangle lateral to femoral artery
- Clinical
- Iliopectineal / iliopsoas bursitis presenting as groin mass/pain; Internal snapping hip syndrome (coxa saltans interna); Piriformis syndrome.
