Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
Iliocostalis Cervicis (Neck Part)
Musculus iliocostalis cervicis
- Origin
- Angle of the 3rd through 6th ribs
- Insertion
- Transverse processes of C4-C6
- Function
- Extension and, unilaterally, lateral flexion of the cervical spine
- Innervation
- Dorsal rami of the cervical spinal nerves
- Movement & chain
- Part of the lateral column of erector spinae; works together with iliocostalis thoracis in a continuous chain that stabilizes the spine during standing and lifting.
- Palpation
- Palpable in the posterolateral cervical spine and upper back medial to the rib angles.
- Clinical
- Part of the lateral column of erector spinae; postural fatigue leads to cervicothoracic pain and restricted lateral bending.
- Segmental innervation
- Dorsal rami of the cervical spinal nerves, segmental per level.
- In clinical practice
- Ergonomic patient repositioning (log-roll technique in spinal trauma) and pressure offloading; maintain neutral spinal alignment in bedridden patients.
- Region in the model
- Trunk (thorax, abdomen, back)
