Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
Gastroduodenal artery
Arteria gastroduodenalis
- Origin
- Arises from the common hepatic artery
- Insertion
- Descends posterior to the first part of the duodenum, terminating as the right gastro-omental and superior pancreaticoduodenal arteries
- Function
- Supplies the pylorus, proximal duodenum, pancreatic head, and greater curvature of the stomach
- Innervation
- Celiac plexus
- Movement & chain
- Arterial pulsatile flow
- Palpation
- Not palpated directly
- Clinical
- Posterior duodenal ulcer erosion into the gastroduodenal artery causes massive, life-threatening upper GI bleeding requiring emergent endoscopic intervention or transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE).
- Segmental innervation
- T6-T9 spinal levels
- In clinical practice
- Emergency blood transfusion protocol activation, rapid preparation for transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) in refractory ulcer hemorrhage
- Region in the model
- Trunk vessels (aorta, vena cava, abdominal branches)
