Musculus flexor digiti minimi brevis (pedis)

Origin

Base of the fifth metatarsal bone and the sheath of fibularis longus

Insertion

Base of the proximal phalanx of the fifth toe

Function

Flexion of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the fifth toe

Innervation

Lateral plantar nerve (branch of the tibial nerve), S2-S3

Movement & chain

Flexes the metatarsophalangeal joint of the fifth toe and contributes to stability of the lateral border of the foot during push-off.

Palpation

Palpable on the plantolateral aspect of the foot along the 5th metatarsal shaft during active flexion of the 5th toe.

Clinical

Involved in lateral plantalgia, 5th ray metatarsalgia, and painful avulsions associated with 5th metatarsal stress fractures (Jones fracture).

Segmental innervation

S2-S3, via the lateral plantar nerve.

In clinical practice

Diabetic foot inspection and pressure ulcer prevention; monitor for friction points from footwear or bedding and ensure correct anti-embolism stocking fit.
