Insertion

Insertion site for biceps femoris, fibularis longus, fibularis brevis, and extensor digitorum longus

Function

Slender non-weight-bearing bone; forms the lateral malleolus to stabilize the ankle mortise

Innervation

Common fibular nerve (L4–S2)

Movement & chain

Provides lateral stability to the talocrural joint during inversion/eversion and gait

Palpation

Fibular head palpable laterally below knee joint line; lateral malleolus palpable at lateral ankle

Clinical

Danis-Weber ankle fractures; Maisonneuve fracture; common fibular nerve compression at fibular neck (foot drop)
