Origin

Medial border of the superciliary arch (brow ridge) of the frontal bone

Insertion

Skin of the medial eyebrow

Function

Pulls the eyebrows medially and downward ('frowning'), producing vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)

Innervation

Temporal and zygomatic branches of the facial nerve (CN VII)

Movement & chain

Pulls the eyebrows medially and downward ('frowning'); a purely mimetic movement without a joint chain.

Palpation

Palpable as a narrow muscle bundle just above the medial eyebrow when the eyebrows are actively drawn together.

Clinical

Target muscle for botulinum toxin injections against glabellar lines ('frown lines').

Segmental innervation

CN VII, motor.

In clinical practice

Produces vertical frown lines; primary therapeutic target for botulinum toxin injections in chronic migraine prophylaxis and blepharospasm.
