Musculus articularis genus

Origin

Distal, anterior shaft of the femur, just proximal to the knee joint

Insertion

Synovial membrane/capsule of the suprapatellar recess of the knee joint

Function

Pulls the knee joint capsule and suprapatellar recess proximally during knee extension, preventing the synovial fold from becoming pinched between femur and patella

Innervation

Femoral nerve (branch to vastus intermedius), L2-L4

Movement & chain

Tenses the suprapatellar synovial capsule during terminal knee extension synchronously with the quadriceps femoris.

Palpation

Located deep to vastus intermedius directly on the anterior femoral shaft; not directly palpable through the quadriceps muscle bulk.

Clinical

Pulls the synovial capsule and suprapatellar bursa proximally during knee extension to prevent impingement; post-traumatic atrophy causes anterior knee pain.

Segmental innervation

L2–L4 (femoral nerve)

Skin and pressure point inspection; maintain comfortable positioning and proper body mechanics during patient handling and daily care.
